Pantoprazole works by blocking the proton pump in the stomach lining, which is responsible for the secretion of stomach acid. By inhibiting this pump, the medication effectively reduces the production of acid.

Scientifically, Pantoprazole is a substituted benzimidazole that covalently binds to the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system (proton pump) on the gastric parietal cell, inhibiting the final step of acid production. This action decreases gastric acidity, providing relief from acid-related conditions.
